"Police pepper-sprayed a journalist," a few protesters yelled.
The police used pepper-spray repeatedly unprovoked and without warning against around 100 pro-democracy
protesters in front of the Central Government Liaison Office in Western District, Hong Kong this
afternoon on the 61st anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China.
A cameraman of NOW TV was reported as a victim of the spray.
Legislator Long Hair, aka Leung Kwok Hung, was amongst the protesters sprayed. He could not open
his eyes even after rinsing them with bottled water and had to be sent to the hospital for treatment.
The protest was organized by the League of Social Democrats and over a hundred people gathered
outside the Legislative Council in Central and marched to the liaison office demanding the
"end of one party rule" and the release of dissident Liu Xiaobo, who is being jailed for
11 years for inciting subversion as the instigator of Charter '08, demanding human rights
for Chinese citizens.
The protesters were prevented from approaching the liaison office by massive police barricades.
Scuffle broke out after negotiation between Long Hair and the Police failed to break the impasse.
Police said that they have arrested five men for acts of public disorder. They were not immediately
charged pending further investigation and were released on bail.
Under the principle of "one country, two systems", Hong Kong runs on economic and political
systems different from those of mainland China. Hong Kong is one of the world's leading international
financial centres, with a major capitalist service economy.
Unlike the mainland, Hong Kong has a well-developed civil society and enjoys freedom of protest,
assembly and expression.
