  Morocco

I spent 12 days in Morocco and it is everything I expected and more. The landscape and architecture are exotic and dazzling, the people are friendly and the food is fabulous.

Went on a 3-day trip into the Sahara with camel trekking. The clear starry night sky is almost unbelievable. You see so much more when it is free of city lights and pollution. It was an awesome experience.

Caravan

The rolling gait of the camels is hypnotic. At daybreak, one caravan casts long shadows over the sand, painted orange by the sun, while another treads slowly across the distant dunes. (Click for larger image, especially for details of the distant second caravan)

Dune Vista

A Lady ascends the towering Erg Chebbi, Morocco's largest dunefield near the tiny village of Merzouga, for a panorama of some of the most expansive erg (sand seas) of the Sahara.

Flight Over the Minaret

A flock of birds fly over the minaret of Medersa Bou Inania, with intricate zellij (hand-cut terra-cotta mosaics), muqarna (plasterwork) and wood carving. Built around 1350 AD, it is the finest theological college in the imperial city of Fes.

Scrutiny

An inquisitive Arab man, Said, scrutinizes foreign travelers at Place el-Hedim, near Bab Mansour el-Aleuj (Gate of the Victorious Renegade) in the imperial city of Meknes, some dubbed the Versailles of Morocco.

Curious Onlookers

Over 90% of Moroccan women would refuse to be photographed when asked. After Mariame, a herb vendor in the Medina, finally agreed to have her picture taken with the photographer, the camera (set on automatic timer) captured a few of the many curious onlookers who had previously said no to the request.

Moon Walk on Marble

A soldier guarding the marble Mausoleum of Mohammed V, where both the grandfather and father of the current king are laid to rest, was almost sucessful in getting out of the view of the camera.
