Vanishing Corner Tong Lau

Part of the Hong Kong heritage is on the brink of extinction.
One of the five remaining pre-war, verandah style corner Tong
Lau (Chinese tenement house), located at 6 Stewart Road in
Wanchai, will be demolished soon instead of being preserved.

As the 87 year-old historical tong lau falls, a touch of the
classical elegance of old Hong Kong goes with it. This tong lau
had been recommended to be rated as a Grade Three historical
buildig in 2009 by the Antiquities and Monuments Office but
Hong Kong government fails to act on it.

Capital Cafe (Wah Sing Bing Sutt or Chinese Stars Ice Room)
is a very popular traditional cafe in Hong Kong since the
1950s. Joint owned by the founders of a Canto-pop record
label, the walls are adorned with signed record sleeves
and posters of idols like Leslie Cheung and Joey Yung.

The retro cafe chain with uniformed waiters isn't gimmicky
or overpriced, and the food is tasty. The delicious
Headmaster's Toast (designed by pop singer 'headmaster'
Alan Tam) with black truffle and cheese is a popular choice.

Toxic Mainland Smog Arrives

Hong Kong is consumed by appalling toxic level of smog from Mainland
China. As Duk Ling, a traditional Chinese junk, sails from Central,
one can hardly see Wanchai or Tsimshatsui in the background.

Heavy pollution shrouds 21 cities in northeast China as dangerous
particles reach highest levels at nearly 50 times World Health
Organisation (WHO) safe limits. Levels of PM2.5, the tiny airborne
particles considered most harmful to health, reached 1,157 micrograms
per cubic metre in Shenyang, Liaoning province, on Sunday. Over 300
micrograms is consdiered dangerous and 500 is off the chart.

China's toxic smog poses very high health risk to Hong Kong, reads
the headline on South China Morning Post front page and similarly
on Apple Daily. Air Quality Health Index readings reached 10 (very
high health risk) in Tung Chung (PM2.5 at 141.3 micrograms per cubic
metre) and Tuen Mun; 9 in Central, Causeway Bay, Yuen Long and Tsuen Wan.

Cafe Match Box

The decor, music, staff uniform, the food and the minibus-
themed booth seats of Cafe Match Box (Double Happiess Bing
Sutt) all capture the retro vibe of the 1960s Hong Kong
ice room (local café). As is the ping pong table out front.

The menu is in the form of a primary school exercise book.
The chicken pie in green pea soup (in Chinese: Chicken pie
floating platform, reflecting a vivid visual of the dish)
alone is worth a trip: the soup is soft and creamy which
works well against the tasty savory pie.
