 JC Contemporary at Tai Kwun JC Contemporary, one of the two new buildings at Tai Kwun Centre for Heritage and Arts, houses an art centre dedicated to presenting contemporary art exhibitions and programmes as a platform for a flourishing cultural discourse. Hung Hom · Hong Kong | 2018 27 June 2018  Bamboo Scaffolding Bamboo scaffolding is widely used in Hong Kong for construction with nylon straps tied into knots as couplers, binding more than five million bamboo rods, each six to seven metres long, used every year by the construction industry. It takes strength, skill and intellect to be a bamboo artist, erecting intricate webs of sky-high walls and platforms strong enough to hold a legion of construction workers. Lam Tin · Hong Kong | 2018 25 June 2018  Hong Kong Club The reflection of the iconic Hong Kong Club Building in the rain. Opened on 26 May 1846, 'The Club' is the first gentlemen's club in the heart of Central, Hong Kong, with members among the most influential people, including senior government officials, senior businessmen and professionals. This second incarnation of the building, one of the last examples of renaissance architecture remaining in Hong Kong, was opened in 30 May 1984. North Point · Hong Kong | 2018 21 June 2018  Statue of Liu Xiaobo Evicted from Times Square A 1.5m statue of Liu Xiaobo, the Nobel Peace Prize laureate who died under 11 years of Chinese imprisonment for subversion, was evicted from Times Square, which threatened legal action. Pro-democracy activists, led by Tsang Kin-shing of the League of Social Democrats moved it to Paterson St in Causeway Bay on Tuesday, ahead of the anniversary of Liu's death on 13 July. The activists also called for the immediate release of Liu Xia, his widow, who has been under illegal house arrest for many years. Causeway Bay · Hong Kong | 2018 20 June 2018  Paddle Paddle Paddle Intense competition runs between teams of paddlers at the Dragon Boat Festival celebration in Tai O, Hong Kong's last fishing village on Lantao Island on Monday. Taking place on the 5th day of the 5th Lunar month, Duan Wu (Dragon Boat) Festival traces its origins to Qu Yuan, a 3rd Century official who was disillusioned with the corrupt government that he drowned himself in the river in protest. The locals rushed to the site, paddling on their boats and banging drums and gongs to scare away anything that might harm Qu Yuan in hopes to find and rescue him but they were unsuccesful. They also brought offerings of rice dumplings to calm the old man's spirit. Central · Hong Kong | 2017 17 June 2018  Shark Fin Protest Against Maxim's Dozens of protesters from GO WildAid dressed in bloody shark costumes gathered outside Maxim's headquarters, a popular Hong Kong restaurant group, demanding it to stop serving shark fin soup in all its restaurants on Friday. Maxim's continues to serve shark fin upon request while claiming to have removed them in its restaurant menu. Shark fin is considered a delicacy in Chinese cuisine and is often served as a soup at upmarket and wedding banquets. Kacey's 'June 4 Desk', with the Chinese characters 8 times 9 equals 64 cut into the steel desktop simulating the multiplication table children have to memorise, focuses on the set of sensitive numbers and the eradication of this pro-democracy history in education. The desk was originally part of Kacey's entry for the government- sponsored 'Hi Hill' art installation at Tsuen Lung Village, with chairs and desks marked by graffiti strewn across the classroom recording titbits of school life. It was deemed too political and had to be removed at the request of the curator.
