The Memorial's twin reflecting pools feature the largest manmade waterfalls in North America. The pools sit where the Twin Towers once stood. Architect Michael Arad and landscape architect Peter Walker created the Memorial design selected from a global competition with over 5,200 entries from 63 nations. Canada | 2018 17 Oct 2018  Shoes: Pain and Pleasure Tiny shoes worn by Chinese women with bound feet, the custom of applying tight binding to the feet of young girls to modify the shape and size of their feet. It was practiced in China from the Song dynasty until the early 20th century, and bound feet were considered a status symbol as well as a mark of beauty. Foot binding limited the mobility of women, and resulted in lifelong disabilities for most of its subjects. 'Shoes: Pleasure and Pain', an exhibition at Pacific Place that combines anthropology and art to explore how shoes can cause both pain as well as pleasure for the wearer. With over sixty works of portraiture, nude, landscape, dance figure painting, and sculpture, this exhibition explores Pan's second period in Paris, highlighting her artistic distinguished style that combines eastern and western sensibilities. Hong Kong | 2018 15 Oct 2018  Thousands Protest Controversial Huge Reclamation Plan Thousands rally against Chief Executive's controversial proposal for 1,700 hectares of reclaimed land at an estimated cost of up to HK$500 billion (US$63.8 billion). Critics argue that budget overrun would easily double the government estimates and exhaust the entire fiscal reserve of Hong Kong plus being environmentally harmful. Families with young children, senior citizens, young people and political parties, are among protesters marching from Causeway Bay to the government headquarters. Chief Executive Carrie Lam is also critised for ignoring the government-appointed Task Force on Land Supply who had yet to present its findings on a recently concluded public consultation exercise. Hong Kong | 2018 11 Oct 2018  Historical Red House Hung Lau (Red House), a Grade I historic building, was built between 1905 and 1910 on former farmland in Pak Kok, Tuen Mun. It was used by the Hsing Chung Hui (Revive China Society) as a base for revolutionary activities against the Qing dynasty. It is named for its red-pigmented external surface rendering. The two-storey house is a mix of Chinese and Western influences. Adjacent to the house is a garden commemorating Dr Sun Yat-sen who founded the Republic of China and one of few places in Hong Kong where the flag of the Republic is hoisted continuously. Tuen Mun .
