Tai Po Water Treatment Plant Abandoned for 17 Years Wasting Site for 1,000 Homes

The Hong Kong Government has always said that finding land to build a house is the top priority
of the administration, but a large number of government land is idle and government properties
are not properly utilised. Among them, 4 water treatment plants have been suspended but not
released in the past 30 years. The Tai Po Tau Water Treatment Plant has road access and
covers an area of 1 hectare. The area is enough to build a small public housing estate
with two 40-storey public housing units of about 1,000 units, which can benefit
1,000 families.

However, since it ceased operation in 2003, the Water Supplies Department only used it as a
warehouse and the water breeds mosquitoes. The Government Property Agency, which is
responsible for the management of government properties, says that it is the
responsibility of various government departments to ensure the proper use of
properties. Some legislators pointed out that the government's procedures for
assessing whether properties are being used efficiently are unclear, resulting
in wasted land and prompting a review to expedite the use of idle properties.

Karma Explores Abandoned Kiln at Tai Om Village

Karma, a multi-talented artist, photographer, traveler, composer and writer, explores the
abandoned kiln at Tai Om Village, Lam Tsuen, Tai Po.

Tai Om Village dates back to over 100 years ago. It has a "Luk Tak Study Room", a school
built in the 19th century and is a two-story western-style building. Before the war, it was
the main school in Tai Om and nearby villages but is now abandoned.

There is a porcelain kiln just outside the village. It is believed to be built over 100 years ago.
The ancient kiln is still intact, but some bricks have fallen, reflecting that the village has
once a thriving porcelain industry.

Excessive Use of Force by Hong Kong Police - Finalist at Human Rights Arts Prize 2020

'Excessive Use of Force - Human Rights Abuse of Protesters by Hong Kong Police' - a photo by
this photographer is one of the finalists for the Hong Kong Human Rights Arts Prize 2020.

Hong Kong Journalists Association and Hong Kong Press Photographers Association have repeatedly
issued statements, sternly condemning the police for excessive use of force against reporters and
protesters, repeatedly using shields to push the front line reporters and their cameras, yelled at
and even assaulted reporters, thus impeded freedom of the press.

During the Anti-Extradition Law protests since June 2019, 'Hong Kong Police Force deployed reckless
and indiscriminate tactics, including while arresting people at protests, as well as evidence of torture
and other ill-treatment in detention,' according to Amnesty International.

Significant human rights issues included: police brutality against protesters and persons in custody;
arbitrary arrest; substantial interference with the rights of peaceful assembly and freedom of
association; and restrictions on political participation.

The work attempts to document and highlight some of the major human rights abuses:

1. Disproportionate and excessive use of force, arbitrary arrests, brutal beatings and torture in police detention.

2. Direct shooting of unarmed protesters and journalists with live bullets or bean-bag rounds.

3. Excessive and indiscriminate use of tear gas for crowd dispersion even when rallies are approved.

4. Two student deaths and hundreds suspicious "suicides" led to police suspected of being murderers.

The police and the government has received the lowest approval ratings since the handover in 1997.
The police force received 35.3 out of 100, the lowest of all disciplined forces and 40% giving zero
marks, according to the latest survey published on 7 December 2019.

The Hong Kong Human Rights Arts Prize 2020 is organised by the Justice Centre and works of
winners and finalists are exhibited at:

[We Are Back] Over 1,000 March Against National Anthem Laws Undaunted by Heavy Riot Police

The Legislative Council resumed the second reading debate on the National Anthem Bill today. Netizens
initiated "Operation Dawn" and general strike. They also called on the public to gather at Admiralty to
stop the second reading of the law. As a precaution, police deployed about 3,500 riot police stationed
on Hong Kong Island, etc. The heavy deployment in Admiralty was like "martial law". Massive barricades
were deployed in Admiralty and a large number of riot police patrolled areas around Pedder Street in
Central and Hysan Place in Causeway Bay.

At 11 am, a large number of citizens gathered at the atrium of Hysan Place, Causeway Bay. The black
flags of "Free Hong Kong, Revolution of Our Time" were raised. They chanted anti-extradition slogans
and sang "Glory to Hong Kong". There were over 10 police vans outside the mall. Later, the riot police
arrested about 60 people, including the assistant of legislator Hui Chi-fung.

At 1 pm, on Hennessy Road, Causeway Bay, a large number of citizens started the 'May 27 Anti-National
Anthem March', took to the road marching to the Wanchai Station. The police raised a blue warning
flag and the the public dispersed to side streets.

Outside Pedder Street in Central, citizens have already occupied the road, and riot police raised red
and blue warning flag" and and fired pepper rounds several times. Citizens scattered to Landmark
and nearby buildings for temporary shelter.

Citizens protested throughout the day, undaunted by the massive deployment of riot police.

Storm Approaching - End of Hong Kong's "One Country Two System"?

Beijing announced plans to push through sweeping national security laws for Hong Kong at its
annual session of National People's Congress (NPC) today, in a move that critics say will
effectively end the territory's autonomy and the 'One Country, Two Systems.'

Chinese Premier Li Keqiang omits Basic Law from work report for first time since taking office in
2013 and said Beijing would establish a sound legal system and enforcement mechanism for
safeguarding national security in Hong Kong, meaning the State Security Department will
operate in Hong Kong.

'This is the end of Hong Kong. This is the end of One Country Two Systems,' said pro-democracy
legislator Dennis Kwok. 'Beijing, the Central People’s Government, has completely breached its
promise to the Hong Kong people ... They are completely walking back on their obligation.'

President Trump told reporters 'nobody knows yet' the details of China's plan. 'If it happens
we'll address that issue very strongly.'

Hang Seng Index crashed 5.74% by 1,349.25 points to 22,930 today, the largest drop in a day
in nearly 5 years.

Sea of Flowers at Fung Lok Wai in Yuen Long

Every year from May to October, the Pontederia Crassipes blooms.
The fish pond in Fung Lok Wai, Yuen Long, has a sea of light purple
and blue flowers, which is very spectacular. They attract a large
number of trekkers and photographers to view and take pictures.

The flowering period of the Pontederia Crassipes is short, and they
bloom and be gone within 24 hours. You may find the flowers in one
fish pond today, and may only be found in another tomorrow. Viewers
have to spend time looking for the current location of the blooms.

This aquatic flower is native to the Amazon River basin in South America.
Conservationists have a negative view of the sea of flowers. Although
this plant can absorb toxic substances in the water, it grows too fast
and can double within five days, monopolizing the nutrients in the
wetlands and destroying the ecological balance. The Hong Kong Bird
Watching Society has launched a Pontederia Crassipes removal activity
in the Long Yuen area to protect the ecology of precious bird habitats.

On 15 June last year, Leung Ling-kit, a protester wearing a yellow raincoat with 'Carrie Lam
Killing Hong Kong, Evil Police Cold-blooded' written on his back, stood high above Pacific
Place in Admiralty, demanding the Hong Kong government to withdraw the amendment
to the extradition laws. Unfortunately, he fell and died. He was the first protester who
passed away in the anti-extradition movement and awakened more Hong Kong
people to join the struggle.

Today is 11 months after Leung's death, netizens called on a '11th Month Mourning for Leung'.
At 1pm, over 100 citizens gathered on all 3 floors at the atrium of the Landmark in Central.
Banners reading 'Follow your last wish to guard our city' and 'Police brutality unchecked,
Citizens will not rest.' A black flag of 'Free Hong Kong, Revolution of Our Time' and a
colonial era Hong Kong flag was raised. Citizens sang 'Glory to Hong Kong', and
chanted '5 Demands, Not One Less.'

The citizens on the scene all wore masks. Everyone stood scattered with no more than 8
people in a group. The Silver-haired Group founder Tam Kwok-sun distributed packs of
5 surgical masks with "Bravo Hong-Konger". There are multiple police vehicles outside
the Landmark, uniformed police patrolling and intercepting passers-by. Police did not

Tomb of Sun Yat-sen's Mother

The tomb of Sun Yat-sen's mother is located in Pak Fa Lam on the east side of
Kowloon Peak, facing Sai Kung Sea. It is said that in 1907, Sun Yat-sen, the
revolutionary, was wanted by the Qing government. His mother was forced
to live in refuge in Hong Kong under British rule at that time.

Due to her advanced age, she died at the age of 83 on 19 July 1910 and was
buried in the same year. Another version was that she was buried in 1911,
a hundred days before the revolution. It cannot be confirmed because
there is no detailed explanation at the tomb.

In July 1892, Sun Yat-sen graduated from the College of Medicine for Chinese,
Hong Kong (now known as the Medical College of the University of Hong Kong)
scoring the first place among the first batch of graduates. On 1 October 1911,
Sun started the revolution that overthrown the Qing Dynasty of the Manchu
Empire and founded the Republic of China. In April 1940, the National Government
honoured Sun Yat-sen as "the father of the Republic of China."

'Ghost Mansion' in Bustling Causeway Bay

Russell Street and Percival Street in Causeway Bay, located in a prime location in Hong
Kong, have repeatedly been selected as the most expensive streets in Hong Kong.
However, in a row of Chinese tenement buildings (Tong Lau) on Percival Street, the
upstairs units were vacant, the windows had been demolished and half of the walls
were removed. They look like abandoned buildings with a "ghost mansion" feel, a
great contrast compared with the crowded and bustling scene on the street level.

The reason behind this city's surreal spectacle is that many developers took advantage
of potential business opportunities about 7 years ago and began to acquire units of
the 3 Chinese tenement buildings that are over 50 years old at 54-76 Percival Street.
However, the asking prices of the street level shops are high and the acquisition has
not yet been completed. The process of urban acquisition, redevelopment and
renewal is long and winding.

The Murray Hotel beside Cotton Tree Road in Central, formerly the Murray Building
of the Government Headquarters, has a 'Pink & White Shower' tree. During the

This century-old tree appeared earlier than the Murray Building, which was completed
in 1969. In 2017, the building was revitalised to be a hotel, and the tree was retained.

According to the government's book of ancient and famous trees, this tree has a height
of 17 metres, a crown of 14 metres and a trunk diameter of more than 1 metre. It is the
only 'Pink & White Shower' in the book, making it quite precious. It is rated as a precious

wave of protests has revived with "Sing with You" flashmob at the New Town Plaza
in Shatin, at 7:30 pm today.

At 6:30 pm, hundreds of protesters started gathering at all 4 levels of New Town Plaza
in Shatin. They raised the black flags 'Free Hong, Revolution of Our Time', colonial
Hong Kong flag and sang 'Glory to Hong Kong', demonstrating they are resolute in
'5 Demands, Not One Less' in their protest.

At 7 pm, before the scheduled start, hundreds of riot police in full gear entered New Town
Plaza and disrupted the protest and cleared the atrium area. Protesters and shoppers
dispersed. Pepper sprays were deployed and at least 1 journalist was hit on his eyes,
who was then treated by first-aiders.
