          | K Explores Abandoned Schools in Town-Centre

Avid urban explorer K, ventures into an abandoned school in a town centre. The school was
completed in 1967 and closed in 1997. It has been derelict for more than 20 years and is
only 5-6 minutes away from the nearest MTR station.

An arched plaque, which has rusted through over the years, bearing the school's name, sits
above the main entrance. The deserted campus is full of debris and weeds, contrasting
sharply with the lively streets outside. Most of the false ceilings in the classrooms have
collapsed, there are broken desks and chairs with books scattered on the floor. The
calendar on the wall is still at 1997.

Urban exploration is based on the principles of take nothing except picture, leave no trace
 and not revealing the location.

Ping Yeung Mural Village - Defending Homes in Northeast New Territories

Rainbow Village in Taichung and Ihwa in Seoul both have mural villages that attract visitors.
In 2014, Ping Yang Village in Fanling worked with international volunteer organisation
Voltra and invited volunteers from various countries for art workcamps. Murals were
painted on the walls and paths to bring a creative and colourful mural village to Hong Kong.

The murals are designed in diverse styles. Large murals can be seen on many village houses
and walls. Small pictures were painted on footpaths, including cute Minions and Japanese
manga character Totoro. The trees were decorated with mobile art installations using
aluminum cans, attracting many visitors to take pictures.

The origin of the mural village is the 'Northeast New Territories Development Plan' proposed by
the government a few years ago. Faced with village demolition and forced eviction, the
villagers formed 'Ta Kwu Ling/Ping Che Homeland Defense Alliance', hoping to attract public
attention to their plight through creative art. Ping Yeung Mural Village stood out in this endeavour.

Transportation: From Exit C of Fanling Railway Station, take 52K green minibus or 79K bus
to Kau Kee Store stop and walk along the trail next to the store for about 5 minutes.

Dinah Savours Lih Wing Tong Study Hall from Qing Dynasty

New Yorker Dinah, who loves cultural heritage/conservation and photography, savours the
historical Lih Wing Tong Study Hall in Kam Tin. Located at 85 Shui Tau Village, it is also
known as the Big Study Hall, and was built by the descendants of Tang Li-yuen, head of
the Tang clan in Kam Tin, before 1835 (the 15th year of Emperor Tao Kwong in the Qing
Dynasty). It was a private school for the children of the village.

The study hall oozes history with special character. With the establishment of new schools
in Kam Tin District, teaching ceased in the 1950s. Owing to a long period of disrepair, the
government invested more than $2 million for its restoration, which was completed in 2004.
It was then listed as a Grade II historical building and open to the public.

Lai Chi Wo Hakka Village Won UN Sustainable Development Award

Lai Chi Wo is one of the best-preserved traditional Hakka villages in Hong Kong. It was built before
1670 and has a long history of farming. Some village houses are abandoned, but the restored Hip Tin
Temple, Hok Shan Temple and village walls have re-instated some characteristics and vitality of the past.

Lai Chi Wo is named after its rich lychee harvest. In the 16th century, the Wong and Cheng clan
had settled here, and it is a rare 2-clan village in Hong Kong. The village retains the traditional
layout of 9 horizontal alleys and 3 vertical alleys. There is a feng shui wall at the front entrance,
and a feng shui forest is planted behind the village to surround the village in a half-moon shape.

The innovative revitalisation of the Lai Cho Wo rural cultural landscape was awarded the newly
introduced Special Recognition for Sustainable Development by the UNESCO Asia-Pacific
Award for Cultural Heritage Conservation 2020.

Picturesque Yan Chau Tong Marine Park

The picturesque, secluded and serene Double Haven (Yan Chau Tong) rests on the
northeastern shore of Plover Cove Country Park. To conserve the wildlife and natural
features of this lovely area, Double Haven was designated a marine park in 1996.

Double Haven is an idyllic arcadia embraced by uplands. It owes its celestial tranquil
setting to the surrounding hills. Well shielded on four sides from the open sea, it is
relatively unaffected by the southeast summer monsoon and northwest winter monsoon.
The air is a little dryer than other parts of Hong Kong and there is seldom heavy
rain. That unique serene mood is simply unimaginable in bustling Hong Kong.
