It is endemic to southern Brazil, Bolivia, northeastern Argentina, Paraguay and Asia, and is now a popularly cultivated garden species. Hong Kong | 2021 26 Feb 2021  Patron Gods at Shang Sin Chun Tong Taoist Temple Shang Sin Chun Tong is a religious organisation that integrates both Buddhism and Taoism. Founded in 1952, its predecessor was the Fung Ying Pavilion established in Dongguan, China. It was dedicated charity work, donating food and clothing. After the war, it moved to Hong Kong and has now developed into the largest Taoist temple in Kowloon. At the main entrance is the Sam Ching Main Hall. There are Manjusri Hall, Guanyin Hall, and Luen Altar, etc, which are solemn, allowing devout worship. Patron God (Tai Sui) is a virtual star in ancient Chinese astronomy and astrology. It has the same orbit as Jupiter but in the opposite direction, and then evolved into deities in Taoist and folk belief. People believe that when Tai Sui moves to a certain zodiac position, those who belong to that zodiac and its adjacent zodiac are known as 'Offending Tai Sui' (eg: in the year of the ox, the ox and the horse offend Tai Sui). People are afraid of displeasing Tai Sui and pray for blessings to avoid disasters. This activity is called 'Worship Tai Sui'. Kowloon Tong . Hong Kong | 2021 25 Feb 2021  Haunted Deserted Cinema The cinema opened in 1978, but due to persistent shortage of audience, it was closed in 1987 and has been deserted for 34 years. The interior of the cinema is dark and quite spooky. It is said to be one of the top 10 most haunted places in Hong Kong. In 2010, a police officer discovered that a man had hanged himself in the cinema. It is rumoured that the officer heard the sound of footsteps, went inside to check, and unexpectedly discovered the body. Since then, there have been claims that residents and tourists passing by have heard faint footsteps from inside the cinema. Hong Kong | 2021 23 Feb 2021  Peng Chau Leather Factory Revitalised as Art Space A leather factory in Peng Chau opened in the early 1930s, listed as a Grade III historical building in 2010, was revitalised into an art space called 'Secret Garden' by a Peng Chau islander. The entrance is located on Wing On Street. When you look up, you can see the sign of the leather factory with a pair of horns, and the words Secret Garden. Walking into the alley, there are artistic graffiti on the walls, round art installations made of paper cups on the ceiling, and also many upcycle artworks made with discarded items. Very creative! Peng Chau . Hong Kong | 2021 22 Feb 2021  Pacita Explores Deserted Dairy Farm Pacita, an avid hiker and urban explorer, ventures into a deserted dairy farm factory. There is a Nissen hut, made from a half-cylindrical skin of corrugated iron, used as a warehouse for a large amount of hay from 30 to 40 years ago, originally used as fodder for the cows during winter, and numerous milk bottles inside it. The farm started producing milk in 1958, and stopped production when it sold off the brand in the early 1980s. The grassland on the hill was turned into a golf course. Reflecting the ups and downs of Hong Kong's animal husbandry, they originally imported American dairy cows and produced milk locally. This was replaced by low-quality milk from the Mainland after the brand was sold. Hong Kong | 2021 20 Feb 2021  Golden Trumpets Blooming at Nam Cheong Park Nam Cheong Park in Sham Shui Po has always been a hot spot for flower viewing. With the arrival of spring, the Golden Trumpets are blooming. It is a deciduous tree, native to South America and is the national flower of Brazil. The tree is 4 to 6 metres tall, and usually blooms in February and March. Shamshuipo . The villa is built in a simple modernist architectural style. There are 3 independent houses, 2 storeys high, with spiral staircases for access. There is a shared hall in the centre, linking the houses. Each bathroom is designed in a different colour theme, and there are 2 private swimming pools and gardens. Hong Kong | 2021 18 Feb 2021  Spotted Doves Spotted dove is a small and somewhat long-tailed pigeon that is a common resident breeding bird across the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia. Its back, wings and tail are pale brown. The most distinctive feature of spotted dove is the white spots on the black patch at the back of its neck. Juvenile birds usually do not have this feature. Hong Kong | 2021 15 Feb 2021  Dinah Explores Abandoned Pillbox Dinah, an avid photographer and urban explorer from New York, ventures into an abandoned pillbox (bunker for machine guns), which is located on the waterfront to the northwest of a small beach. Its interior is covered with graffiti. The adjacent tall structure on the seaward side is the remains of the Lyon Light shelter. The Lyon Light was a self-contained (Lister petrol engine with generator) small searchlight (about 20-24 inch diameter) which was an integral part of Hong Kong's beach defences. The combination of Pillbox and Lyon Light was referred to officially as a Beach Defence Unit. Hong Kong | 2021 12 Feb 2021  Lady Slipper Orchid at Lunar New Year Flower Market The government's order was fickle. The Lunar New Year Flower Markets were once cancelled and then reversed. The scale was reduced by half compared with the previous year. Visitors are sparse. Open from February 6 to 11 from 9 am to 12 midnight. Lady slipper orchid (scientific name: Paphiopedilum insigne) is an orchid plant. The flower's upper lip morphs into a pocket-like shape, like a slipper, hence the name. Slipper orchids are high-end flowers, gorgeous in colour, peculiar in shape, and have a long blossoming time. Warm-type variegated-leaf varieties mostly bloom in summer and autumn, and cool-leaf varieties bloom in winter and spring. The colours range from yellow, green, brown to purple, and they often have veins or stripes. Causeway Bay . Hong Kong | 2021 10 Feb 2021  Kris Explores Deserted Fishing Village Kris, who is passionate about heritage preservation, environmental protection, nature and art, explores and is concerned about a deserted fishing village with a history of over 250 years. Once a thriving fishing village of several thousand residents with stilt houses, restaurants and a school, it is now mostly deserted. The village offers an eerily cool place full of wild, derelict buildings, with broken windows and graffiti, that have been reclaimed by nature. The residents were evicted by the government in 2011, some unwillingly, to give way to a huge luxury housing development for 5000 families. Recently, many of the deserted buildings have been re-fenced and locked-up; paths were widened and new cables were laid - all signs of imminent redevelopment. Hong Kong | 2021 9 Feb 2021  Century-old Historical Fong Yuen Study Hall Fong Yuen Study Hall in Tin Liu, Ma Wan Island, was built by the Chan family before the 1900s as Chan Clan Study Hall. In 1920, it was rebuilt as a Western-style building and renamed Fong Yuen Study Hall. The school ceased to operate in 2003 and was named a Grade III historical building. It is the only pre-war primary school preserved in Ma Wan. The school is 2 storeys high, with a floor area of about 140 square metres. It is a rectangular building that combines Chinese and Western architectural styles, with a small garden in front. A low brick wall surrounds the front yard and garden with an arched entrance. There is a balcony on the second floor. Ma Wan . Hong Kong | 2021 7 Feb 2021  Dinah Explores Abandoned Theatre Dinah, an avid photographer and urban explorer from New York, ventures into a deserted theatre. The background setting on the main stage is quite ornate. The theatre opened in 1979 as a cinema and has over 1,000 seats. It is divided into front, back and special stalls and has the scale of a traditional cinema. After it was closed, the venue was converted into a large-scale theatre from 2005 to 2008, which mainly provided entertainment performances for tourist groups. It has been abandoned since 2008, and various articles in the theatre were scattered. There are some graffiti. Hong Kong | 2021 5 Feb 2021  Diana Savours T-Rex Rock Diana, who loves outdoor sports and hiking, savours the Tyrannosaurus (T-Rex) Rock on the Hong Pak Country Trail in Quarry Bay. She is one of the event hosts of the largest and most active hiking meetup group in Hong Kong, and has led and participated in over 100 hiking activities. The group has more than 25,000 members, and organises several hiking trips every day. Hong Pak Country Trail is a hiking trail that connects Mount Parker Road and Kornhill Gardens. It is about 6 km long and runs around the valley at the hills of Quarry Bay. Along the way, one can enjoy the scenery from Quarry Bay to Shaukeiwan. There are also rare rock formations and mountain streams in the eastern district of Hong Kong Island. Among them, the T-Rex Rock stands out like a dinosaur head, facing the valley, opening its mouth slightly. Transportation: Take the MTR to Quarry Bay Station and hike up Mount Parker Road to connect with the Hong Pak Country Trail. The destination is Kornhill Gardens/Taikoo Station. Quarry Bay . Hong Kong | 2021 4 Feb 2021  Red-Base Jezebel The Red-Base Jezebel (Delias pasithoe) is a common butterfly in Hong Kong. Its wings are composed of four colours - black, white, yellow and red - which are colourful and pleasing to the eye. They love to visit flowers to feed on their nectar, flying slowly. Wing span is about 60 to 70 mm; visible throughout the year. Caterpillars feed on Microsolen cochinchinensis. Quarry Bay . Hong Kong | 2021 3 Feb 2021  Selena Explores Deserted Luxury Seaview Villa Selena, who loves urban exploration, hiking and photography, ventures into a luxurious villa of over 8,000 sq ft. The 2-storey mansion includes a 2-storey basement, with a cinema of nearly 3,000 sq ft, a private swimming pool and gardens. It overlooks the open sea and perches on the hill like a noble and grand castle. The villa was built in 1971, rated as a Grade II historic building in 2016, and is believed to be deserted since 2019. It is built in a functional and simple modernist architectural style. There is a lawn on the terrace outside the master bedroom and dining room on the first floor. The garden was likely very elegant in the past but one can only sense its beauty with the grounds filled with desolate fallen petals currently. Hong Kong | 2021 2 Feb 2021  Pauline Adores White-flowered Derris at Lai Chi Wo Pauline, who loves hiking, photography and urban exploration, adores the rare White-flowered Derris at Lai Chi Wo in Yan Chau Tong Marine Park. The Derris is a huge vine, thick like a giant python, twisting and winding around, clinging onto the adjacent tree trunks. It sometimes forms a large vine ring, showing its vitality. It looks amazing. Lai Chi Wo is one of the best-preserved traditional Hakka villages in Hong Kong. It was built before 1670 and has a long history of farming. Some village houses are abandoned, but the restored Hip Tin Temple, Hok Shan Temple and fung shui walls at the main entrance have re-instated some characteristics and vitality of the past. Lai Chi Wo is named after its rich lychee harvest. In the 16th century, the Wong and Cheng clan had settled here, and it is a rare 2-clan village in Hong Kong. The village retains the traditional layout of 9 horizontal alleys and 3 vertical alleys. The innovative revitalisation of the Lai Cho Wo rural cultural landscape was awarded the newly introduced Special Recognition for Sustainable Development by the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Award for Cultural Heritage Conservation 2020.
